FBI probed Orlando terrorist for 10 months, now sees ‘strong indications of radicalization’ CLICK

The FBI spent 10 months investigating Omar Mateen in 2013 and 2014 — including secretly recording his conversations and monitoring his Internet communications — after the Orlando nightclub killer had claimed to co-workers that he had “family connections to al-Qaida” and made “inflammatory” statements that raised concerns about possible ties to terrorism, FBI Director James Comey said today.

Comey’s comments will probably invite more scrutiny of the bureau’s handling of its probes of Mateen — both of which were “preliminary” investigations. Mateen was on a terror watch list during the first probe but was taken off when the investigation was closed. Nor did either of the two probes into Mateen lead to further inquiries.

Just two months after the first investigation into Mateen was closed, the bureau in July 2014 opened up a second probe after Miami-based FBI agents learned he had ties to Moner Mohammed Abusalha, an American suicide bomber who blew himself up in Syria that year fighting for the Nusra Front, the al-Qaida affiliate in that country. Mateen and Abusalha had known each other — “casually,” Comey said — because they both attended the same south Florida mosque, the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce.

Once again, the FBI questioned Mateen and then closed out the probe after concluding he did not have “any significant ties” to Abusalha, Comey said. But during the course of that second probe, the FBI director added, one witness told agents that he had become concerned after Mateen mentioned to him that he had listened to videos made by Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born radical cleric who played a key role in radicalizing multiple terror suspects and was killed by a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in 2011.

The witness, however, told agents his concerns about Mateen abated after the suspect “got married and had a child and got a job as a security guard.”

Comey acknowledged that the bureau’s earlier contacts with Mateen would invite scrutiny. “We will continue to look forward in this investigation and  backward,” he said. Even as the bureau seeks to determine what caused Mateen to commit the massacre, “we’re also going to look hard at our own work to see whether there is something we should have done differently. So far, the honest answer is, I don’t think so. I don’t see anything, in reviewing our work, that our agents should have done differently. But we’ll look at in an open and honest way, and be transparent about it.

“Our work is very challenging,” he added. “We are looking for needles in a nationwide haystack, but we are also called upon to figure out which pieces of hay might some day become needles. That’s hard work.”

ORLANDO, Fla. — As the sound of gunfire in the nightclub grew louder, a patron named Orlando and a female friend took cover in a cramped bathroom stall, contorting their bodies on top of the toilet so their feet could not be seen. The gunman burst into the bathroom, went straight to the stall next to them and shot the people inside.

“People were screaming, begging for their lives,” Orlando, 52, said in a telephone interview, asking that his last name not be used out of fear of retaliation from terrorist sympathizers.

The gunman, Omar Mateen, was silent, then left the bathroom.

“He went out and started shooting outside again,” Orlando said.

For three sickening hours on Sunday morning, a life-or-death game of deception played out in a bathroom where the assailant holed up with hostages after killing dozens of people inside the Pulse nightclub. Orlando and his friend desperately tried to avoid becoming two more victims.

Gunman's Wife Says She Tried to Talk Him Out of Attack, Officials Say CLICK
Noor Mateen, the 30-year-old wife of Omar Mateen, the shooter at the Orlando gay club massacre, is being considered for possible criminal charges, officials say.

A law enforcement official told ABC News that she may have known something about the incident in advance but claims she tried to talk him out of the assault.  Mateen, the killer, was said to be a regular at Pulse and other gay clubs in Florida, according to witnesses. Estella Peterkin, head of security at Pulse, told ABC News she had to kick him out for bad behavior on multiple occasions.

The shooting unfolded over the course of three hours early Sunday morning when Mateen approached the Pulse nightclub armed with a .223 caliber AR-type rifle and a Glock handgun. After engaging in gunfire with an officer stationed outside the club, he entered and sprayed the venue with bullets. Fifty people are dead, including the gunman, and 53 others were injured in the attack.

Mateen, of St. Lucie County, Florida, was an American citizen with Afghan parents. Mateen's ex-wife told ABC News that he was a "sick person" and was abusive to her in their marriage.

Suicide Bomber From U.S. Came Home Before Attack CLICK

WASHINGTON — When Moner Mohammad Abusalha drove a truck packed with explosives into a restaurant in northern Syria in May, American authorities conceded that they knew little about how a young man who grew up a basketball-obsessed teenager in a Florida gated community had become a suicide bomber.

And they have never publicly acknowledged the startling discovery they made weeks into their investigation: that after receiving training by an extremist group in Syria, Mr. Abusalha had returned to the United States for several months before leaving the country for the last time.

Mr. Abusalha, 22, chose to carry out his attack in Syria rather than in the United States, but the difficulty learning about his background, motivations and travels illustrates the problems law enforcement officials face in trying to identify the Westerners — including dozens of Americans — believed to have been trained by Islamic militants in Syria.

Counterterrorism officials in both Europe and the United States have long said they consider the return of their radicalized citizens from Syria a looming threat, especially to nations easily reached from Syria. But with so many Americans traveling abroad, officials in the United States face the difficult question of how to deal with a potential danger posed by a small group of people.

“Although we cannot speak to details in this specific case, U.S. officials have warned for months of the difficulties of identifying Americans who travel to Syria to engage in armed conflict,” Mr. Kortan said. “This incident exemplifies the challenges faced by the F.B.I. in detecting U.S. citizens who seek to travel to Syria to engage in jihad.”

But Mr. Abusalha’s case is also evidence that Westerners drawn to the Syrian conflict do not necessarily have the goal of waging war beyond Syria’s borders. The Nusra Front, the group that trained Mr. Abusalha, is publicly allied with Al Qaeda but committed first to fighting the government of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria’s bloody civil war.

The F.B.I. and the Department of Homeland Security had some indication at the time of his first trip that Mr. Abusalha had traveled to Syria. But they were unaware that he had trained at the Nusra camp and had no information to indicate he planned to take his life, according to the officials. It was only after he arrived in Syria the second time that the United States obtained information about his intention for a suicide attack.

In the newly released video, Mr. Abusalha spoke directly into the camera for nearly a half-hour, a gun sometimes resting on his shoulder. At times he was calm; at other times he shouted in anger, pounded his chest and pointed a finger at the camera.

He said those fighting in Syria were not terrorists. “You think jihad is evil and terrorism,” he said.

The United States, Russia, China and the Syrian government of Mr. Assad had killed many Muslims, including children, he said. “You think you are safe; you are not safe,” he said.

Even as he was explaining how he was about to give his life, he said his life in Syria had been far better than anything he had ever experienced.

FBI director takes center stage in Clinton email case CLICK

FBI Director James Comey is now firmly in the driver’s seat of the Hillary Clinton email investigation, after Attorney General Loretta Lynch pledged she would accept whatever course of action his bureau and career prosecutors recommend.

Lynch’s influence will continue to be felt throughout the department, and her refusal to fully remove herself from the case ensures that she will continue to be briefed about its developments. Prosecutors within her department — not the FBI — will ultimately decide whether or not to press ahead with charges.

“There is a growing expectation that we the public need to hear the FBI, Jim Comey version of whether or not charges will be brought,” he added. “There has probably been increasing recognition by her that that’s true, that she is viewed as — regardless of her prior reputation as an effective prosecutor — she’s now the head of Obama’s DOJ, a political position in a Democratic administration that is deciding on the prosecution or not of the leading Democratic candidate.”

As a result, Lynch announced that she would accept the recommendations of the FBI and federal prosecutors. The top prosecutor had already made the decision privately, she said, but felt compelled to make it public due to the growing backlash.

“Supervisors always review matters. In this case, that review will be career people in the Department of Justice, and also the FBI will review it, up to and including the FBI director,” Lynch added. “And that will be the finalization of not just the factual findings, but the next steps in this matter.”

ABC News reported on Friday that Hillary Clinton could be interviewed by the FBI "in the coming days."

FBI Chief Warns 'Terrorist Diaspora' Will Come to the West CLICK

Hundreds of terrorists will fan out to infiltrate western Europe and the U.S. to carry out attacks on a wider scale as Islamic State is defeated in Syria, FBI Director James Comey warned.

"At some point there's going to be a terrorist diaspora out of Syria like we've never seen before," Comey said Wednesday in New York. "We saw the future of this threat in Brussels and Paris," said the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, adding that future attacks will be on "an order of magnitude greater."

Comey's blunt warnings echo those of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who has scoffed at Obama administration efforts to defeat Islamic State extremists in Syria and Iraq. Nonetheless, the FBI chief's comments reflect a consensus among U.S. intelligence officials that the group inevitably will strike out abroad as it continues to lose ground militarily under attack from a U.S.-led coalition.

CIA Director John Brennan told the Senate Intelligence Committee in June that "our efforts have not reduced the group's terrorism capability and global reach." Using an acronym for Islamic State, Brennan said, "as the pressure mounts on ISIL, we judge that it will intensify its global terror campaign to maintain its dominance of the global terrorism agenda."

‘Greatest Threat'

Comey, who called violence directed or inspired by Islamic State "the greatest threat to the physical safety of Americans today," said that "a lot of terrorists fled out of Afghanistan in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This is 10 times that or more."

In his remarks at a conference on cybersecurity, Comey also cited the difficulty of heading off what are often called "lone-wolf" attackers acting on the group's calls for violence.

It is "increasingly hard" for counterterrorism officials to find and stop individuals inspired or directed by Islamic State who use a knife or a vehicle to kill people, Comey said.

At the same time, U.S. officials have claimed increasing success in reducing Islamic State's hold on the caliphate the group proclaimed across a swath of Iraq and Syria.
